The Many High School Band recently added several trophies to their sizable collection while competing at the 2019 Parkway Marching Contest.

A few weeks ago in the paper we covered their invitation to the Memorial Day Parade in Washington D.C. on May 25, 2020.  They are the only band in Louisiana to receive such an esteemed invitation but needs some help raising funds to make it happen.  Local businesses are encouraged to make contact with Many High School if they can help with sponsoring their home marching contest on October 26 at John Curtis Stadium with proceeds going to said trip. 

The band is also in need of new uniforms.  If you can help in any way, please make contact with them.

I had high hopes, but was left disappointed, again.  My beloved USA Eagles National Team have gone yet another Rugby World Cup without winning a single match.  That makes it 2011 since their last World Cup match win. 

I had such high hopes this time.  Of course, I knew they had no chance against England (45-7) or France (33-9), as they are truly elite nations.  I did however give them some glimmer of hope against Argentina, who are a great southern hemisphere side.  They fought valiantly, but fell behind and lost 47-17. 

With no chance of making it out of the group stage after the three losses, albeit in the group of death to which they were drawn, they took on Tonga over the weekend.  Although Tonga is no joke of a nation, they are a common opponent of the Eagles and represented the best chance they had to get a win and three or a hopeful four points on the standings board.

One speaks of how fast technology is evolving and one of the biggest ways is how we receive our entertainment.  In the past, everyone was glued to a television set, but now there are so many different options. 

During my lifetime, we’ve gone from antennas to cable to satellite.  We have also moved beyond linear entertainment and into the internet realm of multi-player gaming and live streaming.

Although there are still holdouts like me who cling to their satellite or their daily dose of what turns out to mostly be sports, many my age and younger have cut the cord completely and are now completely digital.  The internet is also a huge source of video game entertainment for others, and said gamers are being left out in the dark due to the substandard local speeds.

50 Years Ago Week of Oct. 1969

St. Joseph Catholic Church in Zwolle hosted their annual Fall Festival with games and other activities in the Church Hall. At 11 a.m. Bingo was played. Lunch followed.

Jane Howard of Many will teach a Creative Rhythm Class for Children, and a Modern Dance and Jazz Class at the Many High gym. She will also be discussing weight control and body mechanics. Howard is certified in dance from Northwestern State College, where she is a senior.

The La. State Hospital Board failed to renew the license for Sabine Hospital in Zwolle. The hospital was closed October 1. The reason the hospital didn’t pass inspection was that the halls and doors were not the right sizes. All of the equipment is being used by the Sabine Clinic doctor, who will have a nurse on 24-hour duty to admit and notify the doctor in case of emergencies. The founder, Dr. Lloyd Murdock, said a new hospital would be built as soon as possible.

There are some big questions in life that remain unanswered. The most popular one circulating now among fashionistas is: Why can’t you wear white pants after Labor Day?

Wearing white in the summertime just makes good sense. White clothing in the summer keeps you cooler. Here in Louisiana, we just entered the autumn of the year and there are many of us can hear our Mother’s voices saying, “Don’t wear white after Labor Day. It’s not appropriate!”

This outdated fashion rule probably came into existence in the late 1800s and it had to do with snobbery.

The Rugby World Cup is in full swing and the action so far has been coming at a frenzied pace.

No doubt the story of the tournament so far has been Japan’s upset of Ireland last week in front of a home crowd, as they are hosting the tournament itself.

Before the tournament was underway, Ireland was a favorite to take it all, but now Japan is looking toward the quarter finals with matches upcoming against Samoa and an underperforming Scotland.

Coach Jamie Joseph was intent on letting his side have a fun night out after the big win.

“The boys will have a couple of beers tonight,” he told The Rugby Paper.

On the win he credits preparation as the key.

“The Irish team is a quality rugby side, but we have been preparing for this game for a hell of a lot longer than the Irish have,” Joseph continued.”

My stack of “Books to Read” is growing by the day.

I took seven books on our most recent trip. Somehow I had a misconceived notion that I would be reading as we traveled. I should have known better!!! I am the navigator.

Let me say two things: #1-I have trouble following the blue dot on the cell phone map. (I think I get distracted.) #2- I get nervous watching for the correct exits and towns.
