Social Security Matters

Ask Rusty — Will Inheritance Money Affect My Social Security?

Dear Rusty: I will turn 66 this year and am considering claiming my Social Security. I have already applied for Medicare. My parents passed on several years ago, and the estate will probably settle this year. I would like to know if my inheritance money will have any effect on my social security benefits. If so, how? Signed: Wondering Heir

Dear Wondering: No, your inheritance money from your parents’ estate will not affect your gross Social Security benefit in any way. Your monthly SS benefit is based solely on your lifetime earnings record from working, and income from other sources is not counted when computing your Social Security benefit amount. But if you claim your benefits and have your Medicare Part B premium deducted from your Social Security payment, it’s possible your inheritance could affect your Medicare Part B premium amount, thus lowering your net Social Security payment.

One of my favorite T-shirts simply has the word “Tetelestai” on the front.

This was the last thing Jesus said in John 19:30 before he died on the cross.

“Tetelestai” means “It Is Finished” in Greek.

It’s extremely important to know that Jesus spoke in the perfect tense when He said “It is finished.” Speaking in the perfect tense is very rare in the New Testament and there is no English equivalent.

TOWNS DRYING UP

It was shocking and sad the other days to see listed some 20 Louisiana towns and cities on the brink of bankruptcy. Some of these are cities we always looked up to as being prosperous and “just a little bit bigger.” Listed were the following:

OPINION: Drug courts save lives, it is time we fund them

For the last five years, I have been honored to serve as Louisiana’s chief legal officer. My service has focused on protecting Louisiana’s families, freedoms, and the rule of law. Part of protecting Louisiana is fighting the opioid epidemic, and this is an issue that I have not taken lightly.

From lobbying Congress for more stringent oversight of opioid manufacturers and distributors to creating the “End the Epidemic LA” informational campaign to making Naloxone available to Louisiana’s first responders to placing drug take back boxes throughout the State – I have worked with private and public partners to combat the crisis plaguing our State.

I recently read that “if common sense was lard, most people couldn’t grease a pan.”

Let’s admit, that rings true especially currently.

When you think about things such as the recent cancelation of the cartoon character Pepe Le Pew by people who complain about the objectification of women, you wonder how these exact same people can support Cardi B’s performance of “WAP” at the Grammys on March 14.

It’s disillusioning to witness the inconsistent philosophy of so many who claim that they stand for one thing, but in the same breath support a variation of that exact same disdain.

IMMIGRATION PROBLEMS

We know that since the administration changed President Biden’s policy was open the border to avoid conflicts and let the immigrants come in. To give an example, the governor of Texas was explaining the other day that last year we had something like 90,000 immigrants come over. This year, in just two months, we have already had 108,000. Of these, 800 were criminals - 786 sex related crimes, and 13 MX-18’s. The United States Congress will take a delegation down to look at what is happening, but basically these are illegal immigrants and there is no restraint to coming in. The policy of detaining these immigrants in Mexico has been relaxed.

One of my sons forgot his lunch the other day, and since he rarely forgets anything, I decided to bring it to the school.

I donned my mask and walked to the appropriate door of the high school.

They wouldn’t let me in nor accept the lunch “because of the pandemic.”

It’s difficult to cover a profound and serious topic like this in the space of a column, but I feel it’s necessary to try.

The reason it’s important for me to address this issue is that, in past columns, I have spoken about the late Christian apologist, Ravi Zacharias, who passed away in May 2020. Over the years, Ravi’s talks and books have helped me and many others better understand the robust philosophical arguments for Christianity.

However, shockingly and sadly, Ravi was recently accused of horrendous sexual assault allegations that have proven to be true. I won’t go into the details here, but you can read the full, unedited report on www.rzim.com.

In short, the report states that these allegations include “sexting, unwanted and

America has inflicted on itself a terrible situation in the election with half of the Senate being Democrat and the Democrat Vice President presiding. They now have a majority in the Senate and America is in grave, grave danger economically. The House Democrats are rallying behind a budget resolution that call for a $6.1 trillion single year budget. They want $1.9 trillion now. This compares to Ronald Reagan in 1985 when he passed a first $1 trillion budget bill and we thought that was too much. Now we are six times that amount and everybody just cruises along as if nothing has happened. The Senate can pass spending and tax bills with only fifty-one votes. They do not need a single Republican vote. They have positioned the right to bankrupt the country. Rhino Republicans have put us in this mess, too.

In 2013, a friend of mine had a cat with a brand new litter of kittens.

“Is there a yellow one?” I asked. “I had a beloved yellow cat as a child, and would love to adopt one for our family now.”

“There’s one little yellow boy,” she said.

And that’s how we got Foxworth Craven Carpenter — “Fox” for short.

Fox grew to be a big boy, a tall golden “regal tiger” as we jokingly call him. When he runs, his “treat gut” swings. He’s a no-nonsense boy whose voice box never matured. He looks like a cheetah but sounds like a newborn mouse. He’s a good boy.
