( Newsworthy Articles and My Opinion) EDUCATION

Recently, the state Board of Education and Secondary Education voted down an overdue new formula for rating public high schools. Five members of BESE Board have backed reform of the formula. It takes six votes to pass anything and the governor has three appointees on the 11 member board. As usual, the governor runs the committee and therefore BESE folded its tent and did not go along with the recommendations to improve our public high schools. This is pointed out in an editorial of The Advocate.

Education Superintendent Cade Brumley had been working hard for the good of the system, proposing a new formula that would encourage schools to do better on tests and to give schools extra points for the kinds of industry certifications that students can get to work toward rewarding careers after high school. But, the governor and others want to keep it the way it is.

Project Celebration asks for Christmas support

As Christmas approaches we would like to ask that you keep Project Celebration, Inc. in your holiday plans. While preparing for the joyous holiday celebrations with your friends and family, it’s important to stop and reflect on the joy and blessings in our own life while also being aware that not all families are that fortunate. While shopping for gifts and gathering with loved ones, please consider setting aside a gift or donation to support the work that Project Celebration, Inc. does for the community.

PCI is seeking the support of our wonderful community to help these families in need anyway we can whether it be food for their panties, gifts for Christmas, or just providing basic supplies for the women and children in need.

OPINION: Some common misconceptions about the way the Sabine Parish Police Jury works

In the last six months I’ve learned some amazing (mostly disappointing) things about the way the Police Jury works in Sabine Parish. I’ve had an opportunity to talk with many residents during that time and I’ve heard people express many things they think are true about the way the PJ works and the authority they have. Here are some of the misconceptions I’ve heard: The entire Police Jury controls on and votes on road construction and repair. I was amazed to learn that this is mostly false. Road “projects” (I use the term loosely – its just a list) are voted on and submitted to the State for matching funds under the Parish Transportation Act by the entire Police Jury, but other than that each Juror is responsible for and in control of all road work in his district. No oversight or approval exists on this; each Juror is free to do as he pleases.

Notes from an Old Bible

There is no reason for ignorance of divine things on the part of any Christian who can read, for God has not only furnished us with a Textbook but with a Teacher. He has given us a Guidebook and a Guide. He has shown us not only a Revelation but has bestowed upon us the Revealer. “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:26) “But as it is written, eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him. But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:9-10) Millions of Christians never have the opportunity to study the Bible in a theological seminary, Bible school or college. Few even have the privilege of being in a Bible class.

TIME TO VOTE

Either you have already voted absentee or it is time to vote today, November 8th. Whatever, here are some thoughts worth remembering. You’ve heard it said before, and it certainly rings true today. There is a saying “Are you better off today than you were two years ago?” Inflation, open borders, crime, drugs, gasoline prices, abortion with no restrictions and the list just goes on and on. This has happened since we turned the controls of this nation over to the Democrats and Joe Biden. Our nation is suffering in so many ways and we must make a stand.

Hopefully this will be done this time. It is important that you make your decisions as to what to do to save this nation. (If you didn’t receive the Index until Wednesday, November 9th, we sincerely hope you were able to go to the polls and cast your vote in favor of conservatism and Christianity.
