Beyond the Page - October 30, 2019

I sincerely wish everyone a safe and happy Halloween.  Although I’ll be staying in playing music and watching movies, if you are out be on the lookout for trick or treaters and if you’re partying be sure and have a designated driver.

It’s a sad today today as we mourn the passing of John Witherspoon, who has graced the big and small screen in a number of beloved roles throughout the years.

My introduction to him was through several movies that made a huge impact on my childhood/early adulthood such as “I’m Gonna Get You Sucka” and Robert Townsend’s “Hollywood Shuffle.”  Later on he’d play the father in “Friday” and, in what I think was his best, the grandfather in Aaron McGruder’s “The Boondocks” on Comedy Central.

It has been a few weeks since I’ve reported about Suddenlink’s internet speeds and I’d like to report that they’re still absolutely horrendous, and even worse today than before.

We’re experiencing a drizzly rain this morning and at my house we have a 16ms ping, 6.09 mbps download, and a blazing fast 0.0 mbps upload.  Hopefully you, dear readers, can pick up the sarcasm in that last sentence.

There has been a degradation of the service over years.  At one time I was able to stream to twitch at this location.  Right now I can’t even upload a picture to Facebook despite having techs out multiple times over the issue.  The last time a tech was here he said his supervisor would be out to replace the outside lines.  Well, that never happened.

Suddenlink, this is not acceptable for an area inside of a town.

We deserve better.

A second speed test after a router reset just provided me with a 47ms ping, .64mbps download, and .06 mbps upload.

WE DEFINITELY DESERVE BETTER.

You know this update was coming, and here it is.  ENGLAND IS IN THE RUGBY WORLD CUP FINAL!

This past weekend gave us two great matches in the Rugby World Cup semi-finals.  As I said last week, I was hopeful for an England/Wales final, but alas it was not meant to be.

From the moment I saw the smirk on Owen Farrell’s face during the All Black’s tradition Haka I knew England was going through to the final.  Indeed, the roses gave it to the blacks and came out on top 19-7.

I really, really thought we’d get a Wales win over South Africa.  The Springboks have been underwhelming to me this cup while Wales were a favorite to win going into it all.  Oh well though.  Can’t give much commentary on the match since I haven’t watched yet, but South Africa won 19-16.

It all wraps up this weekend, folks.  The third place/bronze match is first putting New Zealand and Wales against each other, and it should be a scorcher.  After that is the final of England/South Africa, which England should handily win.

I watch on NBC Sports Gold, but locally it will be shown on NBC or the NBC Sports channel.
