District Attorney Don Burkett recently contacted the Index, showing both alarm and worry with the number of prisoners being released early under a new plan, especially after the Louisiana Department of Corrections has not properly been tracking offenders, according to a state legislative auditor’s report.

The Louisiana Legislative Auditor report, published in October, predated the state’s Justice Reinvestment Act, a reform that means to reduce the prison population of Louisiana by 10 percent, while saving more than $262 million in the next decade.
