During the afternoon hours of November 29, a crash involving a single vehicle and a train killed a teenager from Florien. Railroad track yield signs were visible at the crossing.
Troopers responded to the crash around 4:15 p.m., which occurred on Gandy Road near Highway 171. The crash involved a 2007 Chevrolet pickup, driven by seventeen-year-old Kevin Joseph Brown and a Kansas City Southern train. For unknown reasons, Brown, who was eastbound on Gandy Road, failed to yield for the northbound train and collided with it. After impact, the Chevrolet exited the left side of the roadway and overturned.
Deputy Coroner Ron Rivers says that the railroad crossing has yield signs, but no lowering barrier or lights.
It is unknown if Brown was wearing a seat belt. He was pronounced dead.
Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
Troopers want to take this time to remind motorists that trains can stop, but they can’t stop quickly. That is why it is so important to look and listen for trains when approaching a railroad crossing and to always yield the right of way to trains.
