Patchwork

The first day of school always is thrilling. I love it now…since I don’t have to get up and go!! When I was in first grade (no kindergarten for this kid!) I remember walking through the subdivision in North Carolina, and walking a block or two to school. There were several big kids in the neighborhood who walked with me! Boy did I feel big! Mother took a picture of me each morning. She had made a number of new dresses for me and I felt really special! The first day of school whizzed by and when Mother saw me walking down the street after school, she noticed a little boy following me! Jimmy followed me home everyday for a long time. Mother said she knew she was in trouble when a little boy followed me home!! He was my first boyfriend!! We moved after several months and then lived with my aunt and uncle while we looked for a new house in Hingham, Mass., where Daddy was stationed with the Marines. I had to attend first grade with my aunt, who was my teacher at Saugus School. It was especially hard to call her Aunt Pauline at home and Mrs. Smith at school. I well remember one day I forgot my workbook and she scolded me. I boldly told her she had been rushing me and I forgot.
