50 Years Ago Week of July 16, 1970

The badly decomposed body of Ethelene B. Tyl, 36, of Alexandria was discovered on an abandoned logging road near Lewingtown on July 11, according to the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office. Tyl disappeared from Western Steak House, a nightclub she operated on June 20. Her hands were tied behind her back and her feet were tied with a nylon stocking. She still had her wristwatch, two rings and a necklace. Apparently her killer tried to hide her body with pieces of brush and leaves. The most important clue leading to the arrests of a former Hornbeck man, John Henry Dixon, 24 of Pineville, was the discovery of the woman’s purse, and a license plate. Dixon had been lodged in the Vernon Parish Jail for theft of a vehicle from New Orleans. Following new charges against Dixon, Vernon Parish authorities released him to the Rapides Sheriff’s Office to face charges of murder.

Sheriff Harold Sandel reported that 17 gravestones in the Jerusalem Cemetery, east of Many, were damaged. An investigation was underway.

The Zwolle High School Band were getting new uniforms! The Sabine Parish School Board accepted a bid from Oswald Uniform Company.
