Let’s face facts and the bad news. Sabine Parish has a litter problem. Our Sportsman’s Paradise is covered in cigarette butts, cans, bottles, fast food containers, and plastic bags. Litter doesn’t just doesn’t make our neighborhoods and roadways look bad, it’s destroying our wildlife and environment. Birds and marine life often become entangled in fishing line or consume cigarette butts. Litter also causes a negative impact on our local economy with a reduction in tourism and loss of potential retirees to the area. The good news is that there is a local group called Sabine Leaders Against Litter (SPLAL) who recognized the problem and is doing something about the litter that plagues our parish.

Saturday, September 30, will be the first annual, parish-wide Trash Bash. Each city hall in the parish will have trash bags and water to distribute to participants and there will be a dumpster placed nearby to put the bags as they are filled. The SPLAL is asking that all church groups, youth and adult groups and civic clubs, school clubs, and other residents to get involved picking up roadside litter during the Trash Bash. There are safety vests available to use compliments of the Toledo Bend Citizens Advisory Council.
