January 19 was a special day for many in Sabine Parish, as it is a day set aside to celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, who was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism during the civil rights movement before his assassination in 1968. In it’s 20th year, the annual celebration kicks off with a march in true civil rights style from the corner of Alabama Street and Martin Luther King Jr., Avenue to the King’s Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church on San Antonio Avenue.
