Garland Zane Salter received his complete and ultimate healing, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015. A Celebration of his life was held on Feb. 18 at Union Baptist Church in Belmont, where he was an active, long time member. Officiating were Bros. Johnny Garrett, Buddy Greer and Glen Howard. Eulogies were given by his daughter, Kim, and grandson, Kyle. Zane, born on April 4, 1934, in Rocky Springs, was the devoted son of the late Julian P. Salter and Christelle Sanders Salter. He was raised in Belmont with his siblings, Gloria Salter Manning, Jerry Salter, and Dale Salter, who all preceded his home going in addition to his infant brother, Bobby Dane Salter. His beloved alma mater is Belmont High School, where he excelled in basketball and making a multitude of lifelong friends. Zane married the love of his life, Marjorie McComic Salter, on Nov. 20, 1954, and immediately became a part of her extended family of Russell cousins, with whom they ate well and laughed often. They settled in Belmont, working on their land and in their church, raising children, and extending their unlimited love and hospitality together and recently celebrating the 60th year of this legendary love story. They were blessed with five children, Garland Chris Salter, Sharon Salter Brock, Karen Kaye Salter, Kimberly Salter Auld and Bradley Cade Salter. They also had the pleasure of helping raise their devoted niece, Jayla Remidez, whom they consider a daughter. Zane made sure his family’s lives were filled with a love for God and the great outdoors, good hunting dogs, and anything that would go fast. Zane was blessed with the devotion of his son-in-law, John Wesley Auld, and daughters-in-law, Eva Leone Salter and Bobbie Jo Terrell Salter, and welcomed their families into his own. In addition to his parents, siblings, and beloved motherin- law, Beulah, we know he is happily reunited with precious daughter, Kaye, who has been an angel since 1974. Zane retired from the Offshore Company after 22 years and spent another 20 plus years at Williamette Paper Mill in Campti where his legendary stories will live on by the co-workers he knew as family. However, Zane’s favorite job was that of grandfather to Christopher Kyle Salter and his wife, Dena Wirt Salter, Julian Cade Salter, Karly Kaye Brock, Tiffany Auld Short and husband, Travis, John Wesley “Trey” Auld, Bradley Chance Salter, and Tyler Zane Auld and his great grandchildren, Christopher Cohen, Caleb Zane, and Kaylyn Camille Salter, William Zane Valentine, Parker Hayes Adair, and Spencer, Levi and Noah Wesley Short. Their papaw taught them to ride, drive, hunt, dream big dreams, get up every time they fall, and love beyond measure. Zane will also be missed by his sister-in-law, Ann Salter and her daughters, Nanette Bienvenu, Valerie Marze, and Natalie Salter; Jayla’s sons, Jason and Kyle Brooks and her grandson, Isaac Brooks; beloved caregivers, Cathy Carhee, CaTonia Garner, Alexis Anthony, and the wonderful people of Courtyard of Natchitoches, Harmony Home Health, and Hospice of Natchitoches along with a host of other beloved nieces, family and friends. Pallbearers were his grandsons, and also, Jody Skinner, Karl Stephens, and Steve Birdwell. Honorary Pallbearers will be his great grandsons, Johnny Emmons, Bob Laroux, Frank Wyatt, Doug Carter, Joey Skinner, Boney Powell, Dale Sims, Carl Lee Paul, J.C. Meshell, Jeremy Fullerton, Kyle Brooks, Jason Brooks, and employees of Red River Mill. Memorial gifts may be given to his church, your church or children’s charity of your choice. Instead of flowers, we ask that you reach out and help someone, hug someone, or simply take time to count your blessings. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.warrenmeadows.com.
