Dr. Oey was born on November 3, 1934 in Jakarta, Indonesia and passed away on July 24, 2021 in Shreveport after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Yvonne Oey.
Dr. Oey attended school at Cromwell College and the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. He graduated from the University of Munich in West Germany in July 1970. He did research in Thrombonpathy in Renal Failure and received his medical degree in November 1973. He took the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates on January 22, 1975. This was in preparation to come to the United States.
In 1975 Dr. Oey came to the United States. He did his internship at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. His two-year residency was in General Practice at Euclid General Hospital in Ohio. Dr. Oey became a United States citizen in 1977. He was licensed in South Dakota, Florida, Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. In August 1978 he began his practice in Sisseton, South Dakota. He joined the Medical Arts Clinic in Watertown, South Dakota in January 1979.
Larry Lieux, CEO of Many Hospital recruited Dr. Oey to come practice in Many in March 1981. He practiced medicine in Many until his retirement in March 2007. His love of the water and the climate in this area reminded him of his home in Indonesia helping him decide to stay and make his new home in Many.
Dr. Oey always said that he was blessed with a “beautiful life” and that he was just passing through. He appreciated and loved his friends and all the United States offered to him.
A memorial Mass was held at St. John’s Catholic Church in Many on July 28, 2021.
