Funeral services for Joyce Hilton Chance, 91, of Plainview were held on October 5 at Prewitt’s Chapel Baptist Church in Hornbeck under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home with the Reverends Kenneth Leach, Dean Johnson, and Hoy Leach officiating. Interment followed in the Prewitt’s Chapel Cemetery. Joyce was born April 11, 1924 and entered into eternal rest on October 2, 2015. She was a native of the Plainview Community, Sabine Parish, Hornbeck and resided there most of her life. She was a homemaker, a mom rearing five sons, and a dedicated bi-vocational pastor’s wife serving several churches in Sabine and Vernon Parishes. Throughout her adult life, Joyce considered Prewitt’s Chapel Baptist Church as her home church. Joyce served the Sabine Parish Clerk of Court’s Office and the people of Sabine Parish as an election commissioner for a period covering 56 years. She served as Commissioner in Charge for many of those years. After her family was reared, she worked at TG&Y where she enjoyed serving others and meeting new people. Joyce especially enjoyed reading her Bible, attending the annual August “revival and cemetery” meetings at Prewitt’s Chapel, the Hilton and Chance reunions, the “old Plainview High School” reunions, gospel singings, family gatherings, and hosting World War II veterans and their families who served in the European and Pacific Theaters with husband Leroy. Having company and preparing meals for family and friends were natural endeavors for Joyce. Her home was always a warm and welcoming place to those who knew her best. She will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her spouse of 66 years, the Rev. Joseph “Leroy” Chance; son, Joseph Lane Chance; grandsons, Trent, Kody, and Quisto Chance; daughter-in-law, Sharon Slaughter Chance; parents, Alexander Nathaniel “Nat” Hilton, II and Ida Skinner Hilton; her brothers and sisters, Velma Leonie Hilton, Alexander Nathaniel “Alex” Hilton, III, Ellie Hilton Brown, Hattie Hilton Coburn, Audrey Hilton Chance, Della Hilton Laurence, and Dewey Robert Hilton. Those left to cherish her memory are sons, Larry Chance of Peason, Carl and wife, Susan Chance, Wayne and wife, Kathy Chance and Doug and wife, Teresa Chance all of Plainview; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; nephews and nieces and a host of extended family members and close friends. Pallbearers were grandsons, Tony, Tim, Justin, and Colby Chance, Donny Pickard, Neal Stachura, Kris Hollan, and Thomas Alford. Honorary pallbearers were A.J. Chance, Venton Coburn, and Vic Westbrook. With sincere gratitude, her sons and their families share expressions of appreciation with Dr. Jack Corley, administrators and staff of Sabine Retirement and Rehabilitation Center, the physicians and nurses of Sabine Medical Center, and the doctors and medical team of Christus Highland Medical Center for the care and compassion provided for our Mom, Joyce Chance. Additionally, a heartfelt thank you from family members is extended to the many individuals who visited with Mom while she was at Sabine.
