Nuell Lee Rains, 87 of Victoria, Texas passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014 at his home surround by his loving family. Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 14 at Northside Baptist Church with the Reverends Michael Shillings and Tim Williams officiating. Burial followed at Memory Gardens Cemetery with full military honors under the auspices of The Victoria Veterans Council. He was born on Feb. 20, 1927 in Pleasant Hill to Dueroy and Katie Rains. Nuell served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Pharmacist Mate, Third Class. He met and married the love of his life, his “Pretty Baby,” LaMerle Craig, on Sept. 30, 1950. Nuell and Merle were faithful members of Northside Baptist Church since 1954 where he served as a Deacon. He retired as a Production Foreman for DuPont in 1985, after 34 years of service. He also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, was a member of Woodmen of the World and enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters and their horses at The Victoria Horseman’s Club. He was always looking for something to be worked on or fixed and his favorite things to do were spending time at “his place” in Telferner and traveling back “home” to their place in North Louisiana where he and Merle grew up. Nuell was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Maurice Vickers, Nadine Thompson, Katherine Thompson and Hazel Davis. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, LaMerle Craig Rains; daughter, Rhonda Rains Garza and husband, Raymond; sons, Terry Lee Rains and wife, Mary, and Mark Craig Rains; grandchildren, Chelsea Thompson Heckert and husband, Chris, Tara Thompson Stange and husband Noel, Leah Rains Amaya, Cecilee Nicole Rains and Avery Marie Rains; great-grandchild, Ainsley Elizabeth Heckert, Payton Christina Heckert, Coy Nuell Stange, Shay Emerson Stange, Abigail Ann Amaya and Bella June Amaya and sister, Katie Rachal of Deer Park, Texas. Pallbearers were Tommy Thompson, Robert Tate, Mike Parker, John Pesnell, Kelly Price and Norman Schoener. Honorary Pallbearers were Herschel Jordan, Ben Carter, Pete Sistrunk, Valery McDonald, Frank Folkes and all members of the Pesnell Sunday School Class of Northside Baptist Church.
