The Many Tiger’s season came to a screeching halt on November 20, as the top-seeded, defending state champions fell to the West St. John Rams.
The game began as Tabarious Garner took the kickoff and went to the far left, only to be upended at the 22-yard line. James Carhee ran for a quick first down and into Ram territory, but it was AJ Carter who ran for another touch down and just kept on going for a 23-yard touchdown run. The point attempt was blocked, which put the Tigers 6-0.
The Tiger defense looked strong, with Alan Warfield almost getting an interception that ultimately helped the Tigers get the ball back.
Damarious Coleman caught a big pass during the next offensive possession, as he was wide open for a touchdown. The Tigers went for two via Carter, which put the score up 14-0.
Despite kicking the ball out of bounds on the ensuing kickoff, the Tiger defense stood strong, punctuating their domination with a huge blitz that stuffed any hopeful offense at the line of scrimmage.
The Tigers put Carter in on a 23-yard touchdown run on the next drive, jumping the score up 21-0.
The Rams offense took the field yet again, with Trevor Cheney looking really good. Gage Leach stopped the Rams dead in their tracks to bring up fourth and 14.
However, the Rams started showing more and more signs of life, as they got their first new set of downs in the game, when a 24-yard run by Lamore Boudoin opened the second quarter. Eventually a seven yard touchdown pass received started the Rams on a series of scoring drives that saw them trail by only eight points at halftime, 28-20.
West St. John scored on the opening possession of the second half, on a 14-yard pass to Jamal Walters to inch within their first lead of the game, 28-27.
Late in the third quarter, the Rams received an illegal block penalty on a punt, which backed them up to their own three-yard line. On the first play, the Tigers pounced on the West St. John running back for a safety.
The Tigers muffed an onside kick recovery attempt, which gave the Rams the ball. However, they’d come away with no points after Warfield intercepted the ball in the end zone. However, a nine-yard punt gave the ball back to West St. John on the Tigers’ 36-yard line.
Ram Boudoin cut to his left two plays into the drive, and two plays later saw him score from a yard out to put the Rams on top 34-30.
The Tigers needed to score desperately, but further punts from their own end zone and other plays went to naught.
Although the Tigers lived up to their “mighty” moniker for much of the season, this loss put a sad ending to the many hopes of a second championship season. However, with many star players returning, next season looks to be even more promising.
